This season marks the 53rd edition of a series where the riders do battle on the frozen oval tracks over the winter months. LUKOIL FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship will see the individual title decided over five rounds in four different countries, whilst team supremacy will be determined over a single battle in the heartland of Russia.
Following the same simple format as the warmer sport of Speedway itself, Ice Speedway is exactly what it says, with the more familiar shale surface replaced by around four hundred metres of curved ice. With the riders’ handlebars skimming the icy surface each race sees four gladiators reach speeds in excess of one hundred and twenty kilometres an hour as they compete side by side in the tight and tense environment, it is easy to understand why this discipline is very popular in Russia and the Scandinavian countries, and also with avid followers and fans in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Poland, USA and Canada.
The sight of the spiked tyres, two hundred of three-centimetre-long steel spikes per wheel, ripping up the ice with the riders only centimetres away from the spinning danger themselves translates into an incredible spectacle both trackside and on screen, and is the perfect promotion platform for the series’ new Title Partner.
LUKOIL is one of the largest public vertically integrated oil and gas companies in the world: products, energy and heat created by LUKOIL are bought by consumers in more than 100 countries worldwide, improving the quality of their lives. Sport has always been a special kind of energy: its unique atmosphere unites millions of people, making its contribution to the life of each of us.
It is therefore only natural that one of the Company’s main social initiatives should be the support and development of sport. In 2018, the LUKOIL Sports Club, which manages sports projects supported by the Company, is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Over the past two decades, it has seen many great victories won and records set at the professional level. The company also gives major support to youth sports as well as sport at grass roots level.
"Ice Speedway is a relatively young sport, but it has attracted the attention of many fans around the world with an uncompromising struggle on every spot of the race track, with the skills and courage of the riders being in the most extreme conditions", said V.Y. Alekperov, President of PJSC "LUKOIL".
Ice Speedway has all the prerequisites for even greater development and popularisation among a mass audience, and the FIM is confident that this partnership with LUKOIL will be a further step in that direction.FIM CEO Steve Aeschlimann welcomes this new partnership adding: “The FIM is delighted to welcome LUKOIL as Title Partner of one of its most spectacular World Championships. We are convinced that this cooperation with one of the major international energy companies operating worldwide will enable us to develop the LUKOIL FIM Ice Speedway Gladiators World Championship beyond its traditional heartlands. It is also great for the FIM to team up with a company deeply involved in the sports sector for such a long time and celebrating the 20th Anniversary of its very active Sports Club.”
